Singing is more than an Art form; it is Vital to Life

We live in a time, a culture, that has made it look like singing is for the elite, the specially talented. And that mindset has stolen a birthright of healing away from so many.

Outside of the competitive art form arena, singing is expression.

What Is Singing?

Oxford Dictionary says singing is “the activity of performing songs or tunes by making musical sounds with the voice.”

I don’t think that is sufficient, or complete, and it certainly is subjective.

1 - I sing often when I am not performing.
I sing for nervous system regulation, for comfort, for grieving and expressing emotion.

2 - in the dictionary definition: “making musical sounds” - musical is relative. We may all disagree on what are musical sounds.

Singing is an extension of speech, often on specific pitch patterns, with the intention of communicating, expressing and/or performing. (vocal cords vibrating)

Why Sing?

Some people are hoping to find…

Someone to say they sound ok. Someone to say they sound great; beautiful; powerful.

Confirmation that they are doing it right.

Direction for how to make the sounds that seem out of reach.

Deeper meaning. After all, we are moved, even changed by music.

Fun. Singing IS fun, but less so when we worry about how we sound.

In this quest, we often find…

Stillness.

Release.

Joy & Grief.

Anyone CAN sing. You’ve heard this, right? Beyond the mechanics, we want to feel.

Singing expressively requires a kind of Presence.

A presence of mind, heart, and the stillness that brings focus, contemplation, accessing old stories, old hurts that have kept us from vocalizing our feelings.

That stillness and presence brings the Release.

We release emotionally, physically - that’s how we express.

For some, the Release come quickly. Maybe easily. Then, we’re having fun in the laboratory of making sounds, and making music.

Releasing the pain that comes from those creative wounds runs a bit deeper for others.  This can be a longer journey. The power in singing comes from the release. The air that drives our vibration alongside the willingness to release the wound, the pain.

That body/mind connection is powerful. Our bodies fight the release. Our many protectors in our mind fight the release. There is risk. And, there is faith. Our deepest selves need to know they will be safe and loved when they release.

Permission

Our competitive arts world is not friendly to those of us that need the safety to be seen and heard.

I like to think that’s what I’ve created. A space that allows all sounds, all feelings, finding the connection to old wounds and finding the release that brings forth expression through your voice, in everything you need to say in the world, and anything you want to sing.

My clients - maybe you - are looking for…

Permission.

Permission to make any sound. Permission to make weird sounds. Permission to be loud. Permission to be angry, sad, sexy, flirty, frustrated, ecstatic, joyful.

All sounds and All emotions are Allowed.

You Have Permission.
